Background:Pain, inflammation, swelling and swelling associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including diclofenac, have been reported to be dose-related and vary in severity and duration in patients with arthritis. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of diclofenac on patients with osteoarthritis (OA) on Voltaren, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Methods:Forty-three patients with OA on Voltaren, who were diagnosed with mild pain in the hand, knee and ankle joints of an adult male, were evaluated and were followed for a period of 7 months. The mean duration of symptoms was 17 months (range 10-25). Of the patients, 24 received Voltaren, and 12 received placebo. Mean age was 60.8 (range 25-80) years. The pain intensity score was 13 (range 8-16).
Results:There was no difference in mean duration of pain between diclofenac and placebo (P = 0.962). There was no difference in duration of pain between diclofenac and placebo in the group receiving Voltaren (P = 0.934).
Conclusions:There is no significant difference in duration of pain between diclofenac and placebo. However, diclofenac may be used in patients with mild OA and can be used for OA on Voltaren.
DIAGNOSIS:Many patients with OA, including those on diclofenac, can benefit from topical NSAIDs such as Voltaren.
ABSTRACT:Voltaren is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the treatment of arthritis. It is commonly used to relieve pain and swelling associated with OA. Although diclofenac is an NSAID, it has been shown to have no significant effect on arthritis symptoms. Patients who have experienced osteoarthritis symptoms with Voltaren or placebo tend to have more severe arthritis symptoms and may benefit from topical NSAIDs. We therefore evaluated the effect of topical diclofenac on patient-reported pain and inflammation in knee and ankle joint in an OA group. The study was a prospective cohort study. Patients who have been treated with diclofenac and demonstrated symptoms of OA were randomized to receive a placebo, diclofenac, or placebo for a 7-month follow-up. Patients were followed up for a period of 1 year. Pain and inflammation scores were measured at baseline and after 1 year. The mean duration of pain was 17 months (range 10-25). No significant difference was observed between diclofenac and placebo (P = 0.991). Pain was assessed at baseline and after 1 year. Patients who had experienced OA symptoms with Voltaren or placebo were significantly more likely to have pain in the ankle joint than the other two treatment groups (P = 0.025). There was no significant difference in the duration of pain between diclofenac and placebo in the patients who were treated with Voltaren (P = 0.744). There was no difference in the duration of pain between diclofenac and placebo in the patients who were treated with Voltaren (P = 0.829). There was a significant difference in pain between diclofenac and placebo (P = 0.0001).
CONFLICT OFclarative and clinical data:The study was conducted according to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. This study was approved by the Mayo Clinic Research Ethics Committee.
